So sleepy

So, the flight went well... ~13 hours I think.  I was lucky that I was able to upgrade to an exit row, which makes a big difference for taller folks.  Like normal, I wasn't able to sleep much, and so I was going to write some code.  As it turns out, that's hard to do without internet access.  Other than the obvious Googlin' things, if I decide I need some random package, I'm SOL.  I ended up paying for wifi access, but it only lasted for ~30 minutes before breaking.  I had to resort to some pretty basic stuff to pass the time.

As we were flying in, we got some good looks at the overall city... and HOLY CRAP is it big!!!  Right away though, I notice how incredibly clean everything is.  I still don't think I've seen a single trash can on a path yet, but there's no trash anywhere.  It's awesome!!

Also, at least in Tokyo, the bike/walking paths are everywhere... and it's very much like the Netherlands in that everyone is riding a bike.

We didn't arrive until ~5 pm, so we didn't really do anything on this first day.  We just walked down to a local mall area that had several little places to eat.  We chose one at random, and it was great.  I did what I normally do and asked, using Google Translate, what the waiter recommended, and I still don't know what it was that I ate... but it was good.  I liked Ashlyn's better though.  Mine was a cold noodle dish w/ some random meat and some random vegetables.  Hers was warm noodles, and had some mushrooms.  I took a picture of the menu item so that I can translate it later.

We stopped by some random convenience store on the way back to the room, and I was excited to buy some random snacks.  I found some shrimp flavored crispy puffs that were pretty good.

Everyone turned in early, but I went for another walk, because I really wanted to be able to fall asleep.  I walked around another mall in the other direction, and I ended up exploring a grocery store.  It was crazy not being able to understand the language NOR recognize the foods, but I sure did want to eat everything!

Time for bed... Good night.

P.S. I sure want to figure out how to turn CC on the TV.

I've never been on a flight that long.  Is Japan a bucket list item for you?  What do you plan to do?

It's somewhere I've always wanted to go, but it was just a good opportunity to do it in a guided fashion through my daughter's school, and she's big into things like anime and such.
